  Because the hospital setting is far different from a recording
  
  studio or a music school, Snow City Arts’ daily music
  
  workshops emphasize process rather than product. Most
  
  featured recordings highlight breakthroughs that occur during
  
  the learning process—living documentation of the moment a
  
  student suddenly finds him or herself playing the piano in a
  
  way that sounds like real music, or starts singing new and
  
  decidedly better words to a familiar song.
  
   
  
  SCA’s Teaching Artists have developed ways to help facilitate
  
  these epiphanies, such as playing a lot of improvised,
  
  instrumental duets with students; supporting their ideas and
  
  helping them recognize melodic and rhythmic motifs; and then
  
  helping develop these discoveries into compositions. With very
  
  young children, SCA often does a great deal of singing, as the
  
  voice is an instrument that anyone can access and explore.
  
  Older students learn how to interact with an acoustic
  
  instrument (ukulele, bongo, piano) or even take part in a digital
  
  composition/recording session.
  
  Every music workshop is unique and full of surprises. The
